Reconstructive Plastic Surgeons

Soft Tissue Injury is common in most motor vehicle accident victims.

Many accident victims suffer minor or major lacerations in all areas of their bodies.

Facial cuts and scaring are the dread for most people involved in an auto accident.

Although an emergency room doctor does their best to close a wound, scarring will occur in almost every case. The problem is that most people accept scarring as the result of the injury and continue living their lives with a dreaded scar.

Most insurance companies will cover the cost to repair damaged skin in an accident if it is part of the recovery treatment.

A good reconstructive surgeon can help reduce the scarring and the life long effects it can have on a victim.

The most important thing a soft tissue injury accident victim can do is follow the doctor's advice. However, all too often a reconstructive surgeon is not brought in to the emergency hospital, and the patient can go several weeks before seeking treatment. A patient can leave the hospital with no instruction of how to deal with the scarring issues.

Many people have a fear of dealing with a surgeon due to the fear factor of going under the knife and the "what if" results that can happen.

MVAA believes that every accident victim is entitled to getting the best possible treatment to help them remain the same person they were before the motor vehicle accident.

Scars may persist after any surgical procedure or trauma or infection and may be unsightly. There are many new products and interventions now available to significantly improve scar color, size, firmness and discomfort.

Special sheets of silicone or mineral oil placed over the scars are known to accelerate healing. Taping of scars is very effective, and has been done for years. Laser treatments or the term dermabrasion to scars, especially in the first 6 weeks is very effective. Injection with a steroid or using steroid impregnated tape over scars can help. If the scar is wide and large or does not respond to any of the above, then surgical revision may be helpful.

Most surgical revisions of scars can be performed in the office under local anesthesia. Scars can never be removed entirely, although they can be softened, camouflaged, or made very inconspicuous. Almost any raised or wide or unsightly scar can be made better, and sometimes this can be done without a surgical procedure, by just using medical grade creams. There are different methods for scar revision depending on the location, size, color, and your desires.
